As we celebrate our independence this year, the Wellston OHillCo Society feels it is important to recognize individuals locally who have dedicated their lives to serving both our country and community. Assisted by a committee of members from the American Legion Post 371 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9092 an individual was selected that this committee felt embodied the title of Hometown Hero. 

The Wellston OHillCo Society is proud to announce the recipient of our 2026 Hometown Hero award is: 

The 2026 Hometown Hero Award is proudly presented to Andrew "Andy" Holzapfel in recognition of his lifetime of service to our nation, our veterans, and the Wellston community.

Andy honorably served his country in the United States Army, carrying forward the values of duty, honor, and selfless service throughout his life. Those same values have defined his decades of dedication to the American Legion, his church, and countless community organizations.

For many years, Andy has faithfully volunteered at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, ensuring that hospitalized veterans have a steady supply of clothing, snacks, and craft materials. Through these simple acts of kindness, he has brought comfort, dignity, and companionship to veterans when they needed it most.

His commitment to fellow veterans extends to American Legion Post 371 in Wellston, where he has served with distinction as Finance Officer for the past 14 years. During his tenure, Andy's careful financial stewardship and unwavering dedication helped guide the Post from financial uncertainty back to stability and solvency, ensuring that Post 371 remains a strong and active organization serving veterans, their families, and the community.

Whether serving his country, strengthening his church, supporting fellow veterans, or quietly helping neighbors in need, Andy has consistently demonstrated that true leadership is measured not by recognition but by service to others.
